This page collects travel stories about Greece from news publishers and travel blogs: ferry and airline news, island guides, measures to manage crowds at the busiest spots, and accounts of travel on the mainland and the islands.
Ferries link Athens's ports with the island groups and many islands with each other. Timetables are fullest in summer and thin out considerably in the off-season, when some routes stop entirely. Strong summer winds can delay or cancel sailings, so avoid planning a ferry for the day before an international flight. Book ahead for peak dates, especially if you are taking a car.
High summer is hot and the most popular islands are very crowded. Late spring and early autumn offer warm seas, easier bookings and more comfortable temperatures for visiting ancient sites. Many island businesses close for winter, so a winter trip works better in Athens and on the mainland.
The best-known islands are popular for good reason, but Greece has many more, and quieter ones are often a short ferry ride away. The mainland, from the mountain villages to the Peloponnese, is less visited than the islands and rewards a road trip.
Major archaeological sites are exposed and hot in summer, so arrive at opening time and carry water. Some sites use timed tickets at busy times; check official ticketing before you go.
Cards are widely accepted in cities and larger towns, but smaller islands, tavernas and kiosks may still prefer cash, and ATMs can run low on busy summer weekends. Many places have also introduced local accommodation taxes, which are usually charged on top of the room rate.
