Planning a trip to Germany

What this page covers

This page collects travel stories about Germany and its cities from news publishers and travel blogs: rail news and timetable changes, cycling and hiking routes, city guides and seasonal events.

Getting around by rail

Germany's rail network reaches almost everywhere, from fast long-distance trains to local services. Advance fares on long-distance routes are usually much cheaper than flexible tickets bought on the day. For local and regional transport, a monthly nationwide ticket is available and can be good value for longer stays; it does not cover the fastest long-distance trains. Delays do happen, so leave slack in tight connections.

Driving and cycling

Some motorway stretches have no general speed limit, but many do, and limits are strictly enforced where they apply. Many cities have low-emission zones that require a sticker on the vehicle. Germany is also well suited to cycle touring, with long signposted routes along its rivers.

Practicalities

Most shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays, so plan groceries accordingly. Cards are widely accepted, but some smaller cafes, bakeries and market stalls still prefer cash.

Seasons

Summer is the season for lakes, hiking and beer gardens. Late autumn into December brings the Christmas markets, which draw crowds to the most famous cities, and winter brings skiing in the Alps. Spring and early autumn are comfortable for city trips and cycling.

Choosing a region

Berlin, Munich and Hamburg are the usual starting points, but much of Germany's appeal is in its regions: the Bavarian Alps, the Rhine and Moselle valleys, the Black Forest and the Baltic coast. Trains make it easy to combine a city with one of these regions.
