Most friction on a shared trip comes from different expectations rather than bad luck: one person wants to see everything, the other wants to rest. Agree on the pace, the budget and the one or two things each of you really wants before you book. It is easier to plan a free afternoon apart than to argue about one on the day.
The weeks just before and after peak season often bring milder crowds and easier bookings for small parties. Popular restaurants and small hotels with only a few rooms are much easier to get into outside the busiest weeks.
Two people can share the effort of a fast-moving trip, but a slower one is usually more enjoyable. Staying three or four nights in each place cuts down on packing and transfers and leaves room for the unplanned. Rail journeys, long drives and multi-day walks are good ways to travel as a pair, and each has its own page here.
Some costs split neatly in two, such as rooms, taxis and car hire, which makes many trips cheaper per person than travelling alone. Others do not: flights, tours and entry tickets are still priced per person. Agree how you will handle shared costs before you go, whether that is a joint travel fund or taking turns, and keep a simple running total so neither of you has to think about it on the trip.
