I recently had a BLAST on the 4-day Ala Kul trek in Kyrgyzstan. Even though it wasn’t always easy, I’d do it again in a heartbeat! Before the hike, I didn’t know what to expect. How hard was it? How b…
I’ve spent over a year in Southeast Asia across multiple long trips and visited 10 of its 11 countries — and during my journeys, specific stretches stood out to me as near-perfect 2-week trips. These…

I had such a memorable experience in Tajikistan, starting with the Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) hike the day I crossed the border. In this blog, I’ll explain exactly how to do it. When I first started resea…

Lima is maybe not the city you imagine when thinking of Peru. Far from the Andean spirit of Cusco or the peachy squares and arched architecture of Arequipa, landing in Lima means getting dropped insid…
Phu Quoc Island in Southwestern Vietnam has some of the prettiest sea-meets-sand environments in the country. It’s also huge (over an hour’s drive from north to south) with a slower pace than the rest…

How a flyer stuck to a lamp post turned into a commissioned travel story

Here’s my review of staying at Gardena Grödnerhof, a luxury Dolomites hotel and the perfect base for exploring the mountains in 5 star comfort.

I started my Uzbekistan and Central Asia trip by flying into Tashkent. I hadn’t heard great things about Tashkent, with other travellers deeming it boring and even saying it wasn’t worth visiting. Hav…

If you’re visiting the Whitsundays for the first time, Airlie Beach is the perfect place to base yourself.

In this blog, I’ll talk about a country I recently visited for the first time: Uzbekistan. This Central Asian country had been on my bucket list for almost a decade. Between building a business, survi…

As someone who doesn’t drive (spent all my youth and money saving for travel, haven’t I!), I sometimes feel limited by not being able to hire a car. Although hiring a car in Kyrgyzstan is probably a g…
The sun was melting into the Caribbean and my pizza melting into a paper plate when Caye Caulker taught me its first lesson. After a long day of travelling from Chetumal, our sundown arrival called fo…
On my favourite evening on Caye Caulker I did nothing at all. I pulled up a plastic chair on our guest apartment’s balcony, and watched palm trees sway in the wind as fishing boats got smaller and sma…
Travelling alone means every decision is yours, and so is every problem. This page gathers stories from solo travellers and travel publishers: destinations that suit travelling alone, practical safety advice, and first-hand accounts of the good and the hard parts.
Share your itinerary and accommodation details with someone at home, and check in on a schedule. Arrive in new places during daylight when you can, especially your first night. Keep a backup card and some cash separate from your main wallet. Official travel advice from your own government is worth reading for each destination, alongside recent reports from other solo travellers.
Rooms and tours priced per person on a shared basis often charge a single supplement to solo guests. Hostels with private rooms, apartments, and tour operators that offer solo departures or room-share arrangements can avoid it. Solo travel can also be cheaper: no compromise on where to stay, and more flexibility to take a last-minute deal.
Hostels, walking tours, cooking classes and group day trips are easy ways to meet other travellers without committing to their company for a whole trip. Many solo travellers find that time alone and time with others balance each other well. Good travel insurance matters more when nobody else is there to help sort out a problem.
Places with good public transport, plenty of hostels and a steady flow of other travellers are the easiest for a first solo trip, because help and company are never far away. Once you are comfortable, travelling alone can take you anywhere; the planning simply matters more when there is no second person to share it.
