Planning a trip to London

What this page covers

This page collects travel stories about London from news publishers and travel blogs: openings and events, transport changes, airport news and first-hand guides to the city. Stories about the wider country are on the United Kingdom page.

Getting around

The Underground, buses, Overground and trains cover the whole city. The simplest way to pay is to tap a contactless bank card or phone on entry, which charges pay-as-you-go fares and caps what you pay in a day and a week. Use the same card or device every time, or the cap will not apply. Many central sights are closer together than the Tube map suggests, and walking between them is often quicker than changing lines.

Free and paid sights

Many of London's major museums and galleries have free entry to their permanent collections, with charges only for special exhibitions. Paid attractions often sell cheaper tickets online and in advance, and timed entry is common, so book ahead for anything you do not want to miss.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the centre is expensive. Staying further out along a good Tube or rail line can save money without costing much time, as long as you check the journey before booking. London has several airports, some a long way from the centre, so compare the transfer cost and time as well as the flight price.

When to go

London is busy all year. Summer brings long evenings and outdoor events but also the most visitors, while the run-up to Christmas is popular for markets and lights. Late winter and early spring are usually quieter.
