Planning a trip to Canada

What this page covers

This page collects travel stories about Canada and its cities from news publishers and travel blogs, including airline and airport news, park updates, routes and guides to every region from the Pacific to the Atlantic and the North.

Before you go

Many visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization before departure, while others need a visa; rules depend on your passport and how you arrive. Check the Government of Canada's official guidance before you book.

Distances and getting around

Canada is enormous, and the distances between regions are best covered by air. Within a region, a car gives the most freedom, especially for parks and small towns. Long-distance trains are a slow, scenic way to cross parts of the country rather than a fast way to get somewhere. In remote areas, fuel stops and mobile coverage can be far apart, so plan ahead.

Seasons and the outdoors

Summer is peak season for the national parks and the most popular ones get very busy, with some requiring advance reservations for campgrounds and shuttles. Winter is long and cold in most of the country but brings skiing, northern lights and winter festivals. Wildlife is a real consideration on trails; follow park guidance on bears and food storage.

Money on the ground

Sales taxes are generally added at the till, and the rate depends on the province. Tipping is customary in restaurants, bars and taxis. Both English and French are official languages, and French is the main language in Quebec.

Choosing a region

Most trips focus on one part of the country: the mountains and coast of British Columbia and Alberta, the cities of Ontario and Quebec, the Atlantic provinces, or the North. Each makes a complete trip on its own, and trying to combine distant regions usually means more time in transit than on the ground.
